At the beginning of the summer, I joined The Book of the Month Club. It’s a subscription service where each month I receive a book that I’ve chosen from the 5 monthly selections that are picked by the BOTM Club judges. I have until the 6th of the month to choose the books I want – one book comes with my subscription, but I have the opportunity to choose up to 2 more for an additional fee. My box ships on the 7th. So far, I’ve read 7 of the books I’ve received:
The Woman in Cabin 10: This was a selection from last August (2016), but I’ve been wanting to read it since it came out. So I added it to last month’s box. Loved it.
The Widower’s Wife: This book was offered through BOTM a couple of months ago, but doesn’t seem to be available anymore. I’ve given the link to Amazon. Definitely a good mystery. Although I figured out the twist before the end, it still kept me interested.
Since We Fell: Not your typical thriller. The author takes you into the mind of a shut-in, and then twists and turns the plot from a psychological perspective. Good read.
The Love Interest: This book is about a secret organization that uses teenagers as spies to get close to people who have access to power. This was an interesting (and fairly entertaining) read.
Final Girls: I just finished this one. Awesome thriller. I had no idea the ending would turn out the way it did. And that’s all I can say – I don’t want to ruin it for you!
Woman No. 17: This book has been my least favorite so far. I found it a little boring and difficult to get through – in fact, I haven’t finished it yet. Which is unusual for me. But I kind of lost interest somewhere in the middle.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: I have just finished this book and totally loved it! It’s the story of a Hollywood actress’s rise to the top, and those she loved and lost along the way. It’s an emotional read with an unexpected ending.
For August, I ordered these 3 books. I haven’t started any of them yet, but am planning on picking up The Blinds tonight (after all the eclipse excitement dies down):
The Blinds: Apparently, I have a thing for thrillers.
The Identicals: I love Elin Hildebrand. Can’t wait to be transported to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
The Lying Game: How can I not read this – Ruth Ware wrote The Woman in Cabin 10! See – I told you I have have a thing for thrillers.
Lincoln in the Bardo: This was a really strange book. I would never have picked it up if my book club hadn’t chosen it. This is the first novel by George Saunders and takes place in the “bardo” where ghosts carry on very interesting conversations.
Islands: Another one of my favorite authors. And this is one of my favorite books. It’s a definite keeper.
I’m trying to keep track of what I read through Goodreads. And I signed up for the 2017 book challenge. So far, I’ve read 11 out of the 20 I challenged myself to read by December 31st. I have 3 BOTM books waiting for me, at least 4 more to pick out before the end of the year, and the following 3 that I’ll be reading for my book club (these are Amazon links):
Before We Were Yours: This book is based on a real-life scandal where Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country.
Small Admissions: Apparently a comical and crazy look at the world of New York City’s private school admissions. Can’t wait to read this one!
Before the Fall: A plane headed from Martha’s Vineyard to New York carrying 11 people (10 privileged and 1 not-so-much) crashes into the ocean. The only survivors are a down-on-his-luck painter and a 4-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of a powerful and wealthy family. Was it by chance? Or was it something sinister that brought the plane down?
That will make 21! I’ll meet my challenge!
